my emerald green audi 100 lS

It was the dream car I picked up for $1,500. My mint emerald green Audi 100 LS sedan. I bought it from an old lady who kept it parked in the garage, and never drove it since her husband passed.

At the time I lived at 7300 North in Chicago. I was attending University of Illinois, Chicago, located in the loop, the center of the Chicagoland area. My job to afford it all, was approximately on the 4300 block of south Drexel Place, at Children’s Home and Aide Society. From north to south Chicago and in the middle is a longlong way to go.

One day, I’m driving down the Eisenhower Expressway to Jane Addams College of Social Work at the University. The traffic is back to back and nothing is moving, when suddenly a car comes off the exit and crashes into my emerald green Audi 100 LS. The back was now the front of my Audi, barely missing my brains. My emerald green Audi 100 LS was now totalled. The woman happened to be a social worker who killed my emerald green Audi 100 LS.

A Chicago cop shows up. All I cared about was getting my paper into the social work department. I made this clear. I was just a kid, what the hell did I know, Lord ? The cop asks me, “You sure you don’t want to go to the hospital?” I guess I was in shock, but I’m adaptable. I’d been through worse. “No officer, please take me to turn in my social work paper,” I said.

Then the cop apparently didn’t hear me. He takes me with him in his cop car to a barber on Michigan Avenue where I sit watching the cop get an expensive haircut. Maybe he wanted me to tell him he’s handsome ? He could have just told me the insurance claim would have paid my tuition ?

What the hell did I know ? I rode the bus and subway for awhile from north Chicago to south. Did I tell you, I’m adaptable ? All the black folks in south Chicago called me honkey. I kept walking to work and didn’t look back. I’m adaptable ! I’m Anne.
