Definition of redneck: A white person of low social status living in a rural area, especially seen as politically reactionary and unsophisticated. Redneck is a derogatory term mainly applied to white Americans perceived to be crass and unsophisticated, uneducated. Its meaning possibly stems from the sunburn found on farmers’ necks dating back to the late 19th century. (Wikipedia)
I personally haven’t known many rednecks having lived predominantly in large cities, but have met a few men that called themselves rednecks after having owned country homes in Montana and Oregon. All of my friends are Christians; so, the example below was a redneck Christian.
Here is what I found out about a redneck I became very familiar with. He spoke broken English, with terrible grammar like “it don’t matter.” He didn’t know how to hold a fork, a spoon, or cut meat properly. He shoved food in his mouth and ate with his mouth open sounding like an animal eating. He spoke vulgar language a lot. He never put the toilet seat down after using it. He didn’t own a suit or tie and when he did, he had no idea how to button his suit coat or tie a tie. He couldn’t spell. He couldn’t spell much. He dressed like a slob usually. He was entirely ill-bred. He had no class at all.
This redneck couldn’t care less about any of the above flaws either. That’s a redneck.
Some country born men believe they’re rednecks, but I think differently. They might be born and bred in the country, raise animals and do farm work, but they are not crass or ill bred whatsoever.
Why do they call themselves rednecks ? They don’t know the definition.
