Is it okay for christians to drink Alcohol?

Yes, of course it’s okay for Christians to have an alcoholic beverage.

It is not a sin to drink wine. It is sinful to drink too much wine and become drunk; out of control because self-control is a fruitage of God’s Holy Spirit. Drunkenness is not acceptable to God. Proverb 20:1 warns against overconsumption, noting that “wine is a mocker and beer is a brawler.” We’ve all seen or known people that have absolutely no control over themselves when drinking alcohol and become belligerent. We’ve all known many who became alcoholics too. These ones should never drink. Dark spirits can overtake drunks and drug addicts.

If wine wasn’t okay for consumption by humans, why did Jesus turn water into wine? Scholars and historical consensus indicate that Jesus drank and produced fermented, alcoholic wine. In the ancient world, grape juice naturally fermented and was the standard beverage for meals and celebrations because it was safer to drink than contaminated water.

In the King James Version of the Bible wine is mentioned around 231 times. Jesus turned water into wine at the wedding at Cana described at John 2. At the Passover, Jesus used the “fruit of the vine” to institute the Eucharist at Matthew 26:29.

The belief that Jesus drank non-alcoholic juice began with the 19th century temperance movement which promoted total abstinence. All Christians have a different opinion about drinking alcohol. One scripture that comes to mind is at Proverbs 31:6-7 which states: “Give strong drink to him who is perishing. And wine to those who are bitter of heart. Let him drink and forget his poverty and remember his misery no more.”

Drinking alcohol is a matter of personal conscience. It’s a matter of our personal beliefs. One belief and the most important of all is, “Never drink and drive.” Every day about 32 people die in the U.S.A. by impaired drivers which equates to one person every 44 minutes. Excessive drinking is one of the main causes of domestic violence causing people to be jailed.

Always love yourself and be cautious of your alcohol consumption. Too much is never healthy.
