Everyone of us loves to laugh and feel happy. The Lord knows we all need to laugh and have fun, especially now, when the earth appears to be crumbling. We’re all one-of-a-kind, you know ? Important to notice. We’re living in a play. Each of us are performers in the lives we each create, but in case you didn’t know, God created all of us already and knew how we started and ended up.
My parents Jim and Jane were the same age, married at age 24. My mom, Jane Kelly was a drama major in Catholic college and my dad was an interior designer/architect and artist. They were volunteers and put on a big production at the school gymnasium next to the Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church we attended in LaGrange Park, a suburb west of Chicago. My address was 501 North Spring St. It was big and white with a white picket fence surrounded by trees, all around our block of big different style houses all looking well-kept and everyone minded their own business. We got along.
The play Mom and Dad put on was an extravagant musical with mostly hand-made costumes, dad could sew too. The church actors, musicians, artists and director grew into friends, playing parts. Mom was the writer and director and dad built and designed the stage sets. Dad sang songs and mom did her dramatic acts. All of my family and friends were all over the gymnasium and in the fitting rooms at try-outs and practice, having nothing but fun. We learned all the famous musical best songs from Oklahoma, Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, Mary Poppins, The King and I, all kinds of songs and the music, costumes, and actors were outstanding. My parents did it. The name of the play was “Let Us Entertain You.”
I was in the sixth grade setting up chairs in the auditorium and selling tickets at doors around the neighborhood. “Let Us Entertain You” was the first song sung and everyone clapped while I sat on a chair backstage next to my mom as she directed. Dad was a major actor in the play and sang ‘Some Enchanted Evening.” At home I was always starting and directing plays in the yard, on the front steps or in my bedroom. I would charge the neighbors fifty-cents to enter our backyard to watch the play.
Nowadays, I enjoy watching parents playing instruments along with their little band of their kids on social media. They will pass this on to their children too, and the children always appear to be having fun. It’s the best way to keep kids participating in social activities along with the whole family, It’s better than kids sitting on social media, video games or on their phones and the internet all day. Parents can make it a priority to keep their children busy in fun activities like putting on plays with other kids. It’s a nice project where they can write the play, make costumes, build colorful sets, sell tickets and so much more putting on plays. Teaching children to cook in the kitchen and clean up is another fun, at home project for the whole family, better than sitting and just watching television.
Remember, to always monitor whatever your children are doing on their phones and computers. They just arrested 600 in California’s largest human trafficking crackdown this year.
Let’s all entertain each other in positive activity, and live a fun healthy wonderful life together. Remember, whatever we do today and do tomorrow, God created it for the purpose of Love, His Love, God is Love. (John 17:3)
